Tricks of the Trade: a Toolbox for Conservation Activists
El Monte - February 25, 2006
Hear interesting and informative speakers including:
- Debbie Cook, former Mayor of Huntington Beach and current Huntington
Beach City Councilmember who will talk about how YOU can be more
effective at communicating with elected officials
- Mark Massara, Sierra Club California Coastal Program Director who
will talk about how to effectively address quasi-judicial bodies such
as the Coastal Commission, the importance of staff reports and how to
get a staff report to include information that you think is important
for the decision-makers.
- Mike Bonin, Chief of Staff to LA City Councilman Bill Rosendahl,
former staffer for US Congress Rep. Jane Harman and LA City
Councilmember Ruth Galanter - he will speak on "Being Effective at
Communicating with Elected Official Staff"
Here are some of the TOPICS you will hear:
- Building a Coalition & Staying Power
- How to avoid Going to Court
- Making a Public Records Act request
- How to get your Lawsuit Approved to have Sierra Club's Name on it
- Grassroots organizing - what it is and how it can help you win!
- Including Environmental Justice in Your campaign organizing
- Getting Your Message Heard - dealing with the news media
- Talking to State Legislators - what they can do for you and coordinating with our state lobbying office
SOME DETAILS:
8:30 am - arrive for organic, fair trade coffee & tea &
bagels; get to know some of the chapter-wide & national
campaign leaders
9:00 am SHARP - first panel begins
5:00 pm planned programs end at
Note: if you are a member of the Conservation Committee (a group or
section conservation chair or a chair of a chapter conservation
committeee), plan on staying until 6 pm, as we will have a Conservation
Committee meeting from 5-6 pm to approve grants and complete other
business actions.
This day-long retreat is FREE of CHARGE - all we ask is that you bringa
potluck lunch item to share. In order to stick with
our theme of attempting to live lightly on the Earth, please bring
ORGANIC if you can, and please bring food that is not high on the food
chain, some ideas might include: fruit salad, potato salad,
rice/cranberry/nut salad, sourdough bread slices, etc.
You are also asked to bring your own plate, cup and utensils
- there will be NO paper or styrofoam items allowed at this event!
The event will be held at Grace Black Auditorium, El Monte Community Center, 3130 N. Tyler Ave., El Monte, CA 91731. Street
parking is available. There is also a parking lot behind the
building (off Mildred).
AND -- we also ask that you RSVP to Chapter Conservation Coordinator
Jennifer Robinson (Jennifer.Robinson@SierraClub.org) to let
her know you are coming and what you will be bringing for lunch!<

Take I-5 North to Los Angeles, Exit onto I-605 North. Merge onto CA-60 West
to Los Angeles. Exit Santa Anita/South El Monte ramp, take a right onto Santa
Anita Blvd. Santa Anita Blvd. becomes Tyler Ave.
From the West (downtown Los Angeles)
Take I-10 East. Exit at Santa Anita Ave. (exit 28). Continue straight off
the ramp onto Asher St. Turn right onto Tyler Ave.
From the East
Take I-10 West. Exit Peck Road South. Bear right on Peck Road. Turn right
onto Garvey Ave. Take a right onto Tyler Ave.
