Conservation Volunteer Opportunities

Green Building Committee The Chapter Conservation Committee is forming a Green Building Committee to promote environmentally conscious building design in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. It will promote the use of active and passive solar design, water efficiency, public transportation-friendly siting, materials reuse, energy efficiency, and other building practices which will benefit the environment. If you have expertise or interest in this area, please contact Lore Pekrul, Green Building Committee Chair.

Legal Eagles The Conservation Legal Committee, which advises the Conservation Committee on the Chapter's environmental lawsuits and other legal matters, seeks new committee members who are attorneys or otherwise possess legal expertise. The committee meets monthly or quarterly, depending on the level of legal activity. Contact Vic Otten, Legal committee Chair.

Tejon Ranch Task Force The Tejon Ranch Company plans to build a new city, to be named Centennial, on what is currently open space in northern Los Angeles County. They want to build 23,000 houses and 14.2 million square feet of commercial property on half of their 11,700-acre site. The project would be urban sprawl at its worst, and would contribute heavily to increased traffic, air pollution and global warming. We are mounting a campaign to save as much of this beautiful land from development as we can and reduce other environmental damage.

We need your help! If you have expertise or interest in urban planning, land use, traffic/transportation, air pollution, animal habitat/wildlife corridors or desert ecology, or if you'd like to work on making the Tejon Ranch (National or State) Park a reality, please volunteer by contacting Jennifer Robinson , Angeles Chapter Conservation Coordinator at (213) 387-4287 X204.

GIS Committee If you love maps, help us make them! The Geographic Information Systems Committee provides mapping services for our conservation activists. Previous GIS experience is desired, but you can also learn on the job if you are good with computers. Contact Lore Pekrul, GIS Committee Chair.

Outreach Volunteers Needed Help us get out the Sierra Club message at events around town. We need volunteers to staff our tables at environmental fairs, farmers markets, community events, etc. Contact Jennifer Robinson, Angeles Chapter Conservation Coordinator at (213) 387-4287 X204.
