News and NotesSierra Club calendars Two styles of calendars (wall $9 and desk $9.75) are available until March 31. Shipping by UPS (no P.O. boxes) adds $5. Additional calendars to same address is $.25. Prices include sales tax and are reduced about 30 percent from list. Schedule of Activities Issue number 298, covering local hikes, trips, and meetings for March 1 through July 4, was sent to members via bulk mail the week of Jan. 31. Allow four weeks for delivery. New members may request a copy from the Chapter office by phone at 213-387-4287, ext. 200. Spell your last name and give your eight-digit member number and full current mailing address. ExComm meeting Regular meeting of Angeles Chapter Executive Committee will be held Sunday, March 27, at 1pm in the Chapter office conference room. Visitor parking on the street; observe time limits. Entry to underground parking by key card only. Holiday closing Sierra Club offices will be closed for the spring holiday March 25. Cabrillo Section gives copier A new copier was put into service at the Angeles Chapter office Feb. 7. The purchase was funded by the current operating budget and by the Harry Goldstein Memorial Fund (HGMF). The HGMF was established by the Cabrillo Section, which disbanded after 30 years in 2001. The section fostered preservation of scenic areas and sponsored bus trips in the western U.S. and Canada. The fund maintains a balance and accepts donations for furniture and equipment for the Chapter office. Thank you, office vols Two short-term volunteers served front desk duty late last year. Dan Model also assisted in the ExComm election ballot count. Donald Montgomery started a list of environmental attorney resources. Jan Kidwell, who first volunteered at Chapter office in 1996, has returned several times in the past two years to handle a list of office jobs including donation processing and database operation. She completed her most recent session in January but continues as Air Quality Chair. Rita Unger ended three years of Tuesday morning service in November. Rita's regular jobs included managing distribution of Southern Sierrans and Schedules. Vol writers sought The Southern Sierran is looking for volunteer writers to serve on the editorial staff. Writing experience required (not necessarily journalism). Must be able to write under deadline and within word count and to revise according to editor. Tasks include interviewing in person and by phone and researching. Approximate hours per month: 10. Knowledge of Sierra Club and Chapter activities helpful. Minimum three-month commitment. Attendance at one introductory meeting required, otherwise, telecommute. Send resume, letter of interest, and writing samples to editor via e-mail or “snail” mail (see Southern Sierran home page).
