Muir Dawson, 1922-2005

Muir Dawson, one of the Angeles Chapter’s longest-term members and a staunch supporter of the Chapter History Committee, passed away in February. He was 83.

Muir came from a family steeped in the traditions and lore of the Sierra Club—his father Ernest was extremely active in the early decades of what was then called the Southern California Chapter of the Sierra Club, became president of the Club, and named his second son after Club founder John Muir.

The younger brother of pioneer rock climber/ski mountaineer Glen Dawson, Muir was introduced to the mountains from the cradle. By 1938, at age 16, he was leading outings to Stoney Point for the Rock Climbing Section, as well as events for the Ice Skating Committee and the Ski Mountaineering Section.

Longer-time members will recall that Muir compiled, wrote, and directed the wonderful slide presentation that was the centerpiece of the Chapter’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration in 1986. In the intervening years, he sat continuously on the Chapter History Committee, thus accumulating a total of 67 years of service to Angeles Chapter.


Renee Thorne, 1929-2005

Renee Thorne, active outings leader, died in February. Thorne was on the Long Beach Executive Committee and served as chair of the Long Beach Group. She was a regular hiker of Mt. Baldy. She was 75.
