Not a backpack. Leave LA Friday aft for 3 days of sightseeing and day hiking at Pt Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods National Monument, and San Francisco's Presidio. Pt Reyes offers some of the finest bird watching opportunities in the US with nearly 470 species observed. See one of the largest concentrations of Tule Elk in California with about 400 at Pt Reyes. 3 day/2 night backpack (4 mi, 400'gain/1000' loss) descends into N Kohala coastal rainforest for beach camp. Layover day hike to explore the Kohala Ditch Trail. Exit backpack (4 mi, 1000' gain/400' loss). 2 nights cabins Hawaii Volcanoes NP.
