11/28/09 Palm Springs Tram (8450'), San Jacinto Pk (10,804 ') Rating:   O
Strenuous hike, 10 mi, 8300' gain to tram with additional 10 mi rt, 2400' gain to the peak. Very early start. It was too hot in July, so we've rescheduled our annual hike again when it's cooler. We'll attempt to have two groups, hopefully both SJ bound, one faster, the other naturalizing along the way. Bring money for tram ride and taxi back to cars. Invigorating conditioning hike at a moderate pace. 10 mi rt, 4000' gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC), which begins 1/09. Subjects include safe mountain travel, map & compass and wilderness first aid. Meet 9 am at trailhead, Mira Monte Ave and Mt Wilson Trail Dr (210 Fwy Baldwin Ave exit, Baldwin N to Mira Monte, R to trailhead). This is a residential neighborhood, so be mindful of parking regulations and residents' quiet enjoyment of their neighborhood. Bring lugsoles, 3 qts water, snacks to share.

This pleasant hike with great vistas of the LA basin is suitable for beginners and the pace will be moderate, both up and down the Mt Wilson Toll Rd trail. 6 mi rt, 1800' gain. Meet 8:45 am in parking lot just N of Eaton Cyn Nature Ctr (off Altadena Dr in Pasadena). Bring 1 liter water, trail snacks, appropriate clothing.

Want to become a more competent participant on Club trips or aspire to be a leader? This 10-week course uses classroom instruction and field experiences to teach skills for mountain and desert travel. The course includes navigation instruction using topo maps and compass, rock scrambling techniques, snow travel, how to choose equipment, backpacking food and nutrition, an introduction to wilderness first aid, trip planning and lots more.
