Outings & Events in and about Cleveland National Forest

  A Forest Service Pass (FSP) is required for parking within all National Forests in southern California.  


APR 26  SAT        SIERRA SAGE OF S OC, OC SIERRA SINGLES
O: MORGAN TRAIL
:  Moderate pace 10 mi rt, 1000' gain.  Hike to South Main Divide for lunch in scenic grove of oaks and sycamores in upper Morrell Canyon.  Return same way.  Meet 8 am at S OC rideshare or 8:30 at FS San Juan Loop parking area across from Candy Store.  Bring 3 qts water, lunch, lugsoles, 10 essentials, jacket, hat, FSP.  Rain cancels.  Ldr: Sylvie Cote.  Asst: Todd Clark


APR 30                  WED      ORANGE COUNTY
O: SANTA ROSA PLATEAU:
6 mi rt, 500’ gain.  Enjoy the glorious springtime in this ecological preserve, hiking along streams, through rolling grasslands and 100-year-old Engelmann oak woodlands. Lavish wildflowers should be in bloom, as spring runoff collects in vernal pools, beckoning wildlife. $2 entrance fee supports reserve upkeep. Meet 8:30 am N OC rideshare pt with water, lunch, lugsoles, binoculars, field guides. Rain cancels.  Ldr: Gabriele Rau.  Asst: Andy Beall. 


MAY 10-11          SAT-SUN              SANTA ANA MT TF, TRAILS
O: TRAIL MAINTENANCE, SAN MATEO CYN TRAIL:  This will be the 32st annual ‘Backpack/swim/gourmet Trail Maintenance’ Outing in the San Mateo Wilderness. Sat morning, backpack 4 mi, 400’ gain/900’ loss to campsite near scenic San Mateo Creek. Equestrian assist with gear will make for light packs. Sat afternoon and Sun morning, work on Bluewater and San Mateo Cyn trails. Tools provided, newcomers welcome. For those interested, a May 9 – 11 option is possible. Contact Ldr: John Kaiser. MAY 14                                WED                      ORANGE COUNTY, SAMTF, TRAILS
O: FOX SPRINGS/LUCAS CANYON: 5 mi, 700’ gain. The Wed hikers extend their adopt-a-trail lopfest to the Lucas Cyn trail. Hike through the heart of Lucas Cyn, pausing for some branch trimming at the mid section (no heavy tools). Loppers provided. We’ll see a few artifacts of the early residents along the way. Short shuttle. Newcomers welcome, but contact leader in advance to be added to the volunteer list. Meet 8:30 am SOC rideshare pt with water, lunch, lug soles, gloves. Rain cancels. MAY 17                                SAT                        CAMERA COMMITTEE
O: SANTA ROSA PLATEAU:
Slow paced hike, 5 mi rt, 200’ gain over easy terrain.  Explore open space oak and woodlands with views of mesas, rolling grassland, and wildflowers near Temecula. Many photo ops and a digital IR photography demo. Meet 10 am SRP Visitors Center. Bring water, lunch, camera, binoculars. $3 fee. Ldrs: Steve Anderson, Wesley Peck. 


JUN 7                    SAT        SANTA ANA MTS TF, TRAILS
O: SAN MATEO WILDERNESS TRAIL WORK.
  SAMTF volunteers (male & female) clear brush and keep trails repaired in the San Mateo Wilderness on monthly outings.  The location for June is to be determined. Tools & instructions provided.  Bring water, lunch, sturdy boots, gloves.  Rain/extreme fire danger cancels. For details contact Ldr: John Kaiser. No Orange County (NOC):         Park-N-Ride, E side of Tustin Ave just S of Lincoln Ave, Orange.

So Orange County (SOC):          Ortega Business Center parking lot, SE corner Ortega Hwy/Rancho Viejo (one block E of I-5), San Juan Capistrano.

Tustin:                                      Redhill Ave on N side (fwy side) of Stater Bros Market, just one block SW of Redhill exit from I-5.
